A woman is in a 'critical' condition after being attacked by cattle on an island in Lower Lough Erne.

The woman was attacked while walking her dog on the island of Devenish last Sunday.

A volunteer crew from the RNLI responded first to the scene.

Stephen Ingram, Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer with Enniskillen RNLI, says volunteers crews responded first to the scene after being alerted by Belfast Coast Guard.

"Our crew was out training at Lough Erne Yacht Club when we received the call at about quarter past 10 on Sunday morning," he said.

"The Belfast Coast Guard instructed our crews to proceed to Devenish Island, that there was medical assistance required. Our crew on our rescue water craft arrived there first and was with the lady and supported her and reassured her," he continued.

"Other crew then transferred paramedics from the mainland to island where they further assisted her medically," he said.

"She was then airlifted by Rescue 118 - the Irish Coast Guard helicopter - that came up from Sligo. She was taken to the South West Acute Hospital," he added.

She's since been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where her condition is thought to be serious.

The lady's dog, who was also injured, was brought to the Manor House Marina from Devenish where he was met by a waiting vet. Despite efforts to help the dog, it subsequently died of its injuries.

Eddie Morton, Lifeboat Operations Manager on behalf of the Enniskillen RNLI also wished the lady a full recovery adding that the thoughts of those at the station were with her family at this time.
