Work is underway on an extension to the Park and Ride facility at the Castledawson roundabout.
Almost 200 new spaces are to be provided at a cost of around £350,000.
Ten disabled parking bays are included in the expansion.
There are currently 78 spaces for those choosing to car share or use public transport.
Work is expected to be completed by April 2017.
The proposed scheme will provide additional capacity for safe and convenient parking.
The car park will be served by a regular bus service operating along the main A6 between Belfast and the North West.
Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard says the existing Park and Ride at Castledawson has proven very popular with occupancy rates at capacity in recent months.
“This scheme is a reflection of my Department's commitment to promote more sustainable travel and in conjunction with Translink, we will continue to improve the availability of Park and Ride and Park and Share facilities across the north of Ireland,” he adds.
The work is being undertaken by contractors FP McCann.
