Young people in the district are being offered the chance to experience life behind the scenes with the emergency services.

It's part of the Youth Volunteer Academy launched recently by the PSNI in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The initiative is being piloted in Newry for local 12-18 year-olds who meet on a weekly basis to gain a practical insight into emergency and public services through a variety of activities.

These are delivered by volunteer leaders from the police and ambulance services, with support from the community.

The project developed in conjunction with the Policing Board, aims to strengthen the relationship between the two emergency services and young people.
