Tsunami alert after 7.8 magnitude quake hits the Philippines

An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 has struck Mindanao in the Philippines, the US Geological Survey has said.

Initially, the German Research Centre for Geosciences had measured the quake at 8.2 magnitude with a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).

It has prompted the US ​Tsunami Warning System to ​issue a ​tsunami threat, according to Reuters news agency.

The Indonesian Geophysics Agency has also issued a ​tsunami warning for coastal areas of Indonesia's northeast.
