A new one-way road system devised for Brook Street in the town came into effect yesterday. It's designed to alleviate traffic during peak times, especially during school-term time.

The new system is now in effect as of Monday 22 August 2016.

The Brook Street one way traffic system will operate for its entire length in a easterly direction between Brookmount Road and Castle Street.

Drivers trying to access Brook Street from Castle Street will no longer be able to do so.

Instead, motorists are advised to go via Ashfield Terrace and Brookmount Road instead.

"This system will ease traffic congestion and reduce vehicle and pedestrian conflict on this narrow urban route," a Transport NI spokesperson said.

Improving safety for all road users, in particular school children from the Holy Family Primary School sites on Brookmount Road and Brook Street was a priority," they added.

Motorists are advised to allow additional time when planning any journeys.

They're also asked to drive with "due care and attention" and bearing in mind new road signs and road markings now in place as part of the new one-way system.
