Ruling reserved on evidence in Official IRA leader Joe McCann case

A judge in Belfast has reserved his ruling on whether statements made by two former soldiers accused of the murder of Official IRA leader Joe McCann in 1972 will be admitted as evidence in their trial.

Mr Justice O’Hara heard defence and prosecution submissions on the pivotal issue on Thursday.

The legal issue was debated during a standalone voir dire hearing.

The judge said he will make a ruling at 11am on Friday.

Soldiers A and C are accused of the murder of Mr McCann, 24, as he attempted to run away from police and soldiers on a street in the Markets area of Belfast in April 1972.
