After plenty of rumours, the BBC has officially confirmed the sci-fi show's festive special 'The Church on Ruby Road' will air on December 25.

In a press release breaking down this year's seasonal TV schedule, the broadcaster described the episode as the Fifteenth Doctor's "first epic adventure" following the show's 60th anniversary celebrations.

Christmas Day will also mark the end of beloved comedy 'Ghosts' as the finale takes viewers to Button House one last time.

Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, said: “This year’s Christmas line-up on the BBC is an extravaganza of must watch shows!

"Join us as we welcome a brand new Doctor and wave goodbye to our beloved sitcom 'Ghosts.' "

She promised viewers "a spectacular range of entertainment, drama, comedy and factual programming across the festive fortnight", adding: "It’s essential viewing for everyone as we bring friends and families together across the UK.”

Before Ncuti takes over at Christmas, David Tennant is in the midst of three special episodes for the show's anniversary.

The returning star is playing the new Fourteenth Doctor rather than reprising his role as the Tenth, and he was back in the TARDIS over the weekend for 'The Star Beast', with 'Wild Blue Yonder' and 'The Giggle' to follow.

The latter will mark the end of his latest run on the show, but he isn't ruling out another comeback in the future.

Speaking to SFX magazine, he recently said: "I think it would be disingenuous to imagine that I might never be asked again, because history would indicate that it was always a possibility.

"So I’m not going to say never because I don’t think anyone would believe me.

"That doesn’t mean I know that I ever will. But I suppose until I can’t run down a corridor it’s always a possibility. But I promise to have no plans."
