'Treecycle' your old Christmas tree at Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo are calling upon the public to donate their Christmas trees. Real Christmas trees are a great form of enrichment to encourage natural behaviour at the zoo and provide stimulation for the animals.

Belfast Zoo would be ‘treely’ grateful for all your old, natural Christmas trees this year.

Your kind tree donations will go towards providing the animals with enrichment, bedding and some festive fun. ‘Treecycle’ donations are open to individuals only.

Zoo Manager, Alyn Cairns, explains “Enrichment is an essential part of providing the best care possible for our animals.  Enrichment is used to encourage natural behaviours and to provide stimulation within their environments.

Our team continually strive to develop new and innovative enrichment techniques. The natural tree recycling idea has been a festive hit with all the locals in recent years and we are pleased to offer the incentive again this year. All of the natural Christmas trees you donate to the zoo will be used for our animals, whether it’s for bedding or snacking on!’’

Belfast Zoo are also keen for other donations including:

• Clothes
• Bedsheets, duvet covers, pillowcases
• Logs
• Cardboard tubes
• Unused pet toys
• Hanging baskets
• Natural pine cones
• Sacks
• Netting
• And much more!

You can donate your tree by leaving it at the drop off point at the Belfast Zoo car park.
