Three brothers from county Armagh have been sentenced in Newry Crown court for their roles in a tax scam.

The farming brothers received repayments of over a £140,000 in VAT, after forging invoices to support fake claims.

Yesterday, 52 year-old Ronald John Sinclair Halliday of Drumnahunshin Road in Whitecross, who played a central role, was sentence sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for 18 months.

His brothers 49 year-old Gordon William Barrie Halliday from Bessbrook Road in Mountnorris, and Richard Jonathan Kris Halliday who's 42 years old with an address in Madden Road, Keady, were sentenced on the June 21st.

They received nine and six month sentences respectively, both suspended for 18 months.

HMRC began investigating the Halliday brothers in 2013.

The businesses and individuals, whose names were used on the falsified documents, confirmed the invoices were false.

Handwriting analysis, by the Forensic Science Agency of Northern Ireland, concluded that it was likely some were written by Ronald Halliday.

All three men had pleaded guilty to the charges against them.
