The family of critically injured footballer, Niall Grace, say he has made "significant progress" towards recovery in the past few days.
In a statement to Institute Football Club, they say he is "conscious, talking and able to recognise family and friends".
The 24 year old has been moved from intensive care to a hospital ward where staff will continue to monitor his progress.
The statement added:
"Whilst Niall is still showing signs of confusion and frustration, the family are hopeful that his condition will continue to improve over the coming weeks.
"Finally, the Grace family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation for the love and generosity they have been shown during this difficult time."
The midfielder suffered a serious head injury in a one-punch attack while on a night out in Derry - Londonderry earlier this month.
Matthew McDermott from Cornshell Fields has been charged in connection with the assault.
The 22 year old is accused of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a Class A drug.
