The interview process to appoint the next PSNI Chief Constable will begin today, with four candidates in the running.

It's a job that'll attract a salary of over £200,000 per year when current Chief, George Hamilton retires next month.

A panel of seven members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board will be responsible for recommending the next head of the force.

Only four of Stormont's five main parties are involved in the selection process.

The BBC reports the SDLP's Dolores Kelly has had to withdraw for 'personal reasons'.

She's the only member of her party on the policing board so can't be replaced in time for the selection.

The PSNI's Deputy and Assistant Chief Constables, Stephen Martin and Mark Hamilton, will go up against former Cheshire Police Chief Simon Byrne and  Bedfordshire Police chief Jon Boucher.

Mr.Boucher's been conducting a major inquiry into the activities of a notorious double Army agent within the IRA known as 'Stakeknife' for the past three years.

The policing board will meet tomorrow evening, when the secretary of State is expected to confirm an appointment in the absence of a Justice Minister at Stormont.
