The mother of a 3-year-old boy, who was knocked down and killed in Newtownards, has spoken of her heartbreak at losing a second child in less than two years.

Kai Corkum was heading to the shop for a lollipop with his Aunt, when he was struck by a car last Thursday.

The toddler died from his injuries in hospital a day later.

Kai's mum Yasmine says "there's no words" to describe the pain of losing a child.

This is the second tragedy to hit the Corkum family, as the 26 year-old and her partner Michael buried their 19-week-old baby Lily-Mai in January 2017.

Yasmine has described Kai as an affectionate boy who always had a smile and loved everybody.

She says he was fascinated with lolly pops and monkeys and loved to wear his wellies, while making monkey noises.

The toddler's family have decided to keep him in his own home until the funeral this week.

Yasmine says his twin brothers, Mason and Taylor, simply think their sibling is sleeping upstairs in his room.

She has been speaking to Q Radio's reporter Simon Hunter:

A 'Go Fund Me' page has been set up anonymously to help Kai's family pay for the funeral.

So far, the page has almost reached it's target of £5,000 and has raised over £4,200.

Yasmine says the family is "overwhelmed" at how much support they have received since Kai passed.

"The fact that we're in so many people's thoughts is just overwhelming. It just feels like we're not on our own."

The funeral of Kai Corkum will take place on Wednesday at S.Clarke and Son funeral directors in Newtownards at 11am.

The burial will follow at White Church cemetery, Ballywalter at 12pm.
