Austin: At least three people, including alleged gunman, killed and 14 injured in Texas bar shooting

At least three people, including the alleged gunman, have been killed after a shooting at a bar in Texas.

Authorities say 14 others were wounded after the incident in central Austin.

The city's police chief Lisa Davis said at a news conference early on Sunday that her force received reports of a "male shooting" at Buford's, a popular beer garden in the city's entertainment district.

When police arrived at the scene on West 6th Street, they found a man with a gun and three officers "returned fire, killing the suspect".

Ms Davis said they were lucky because of all the resources the police department had on nearby West 6th Street at the time, and as bars were closing, the resources "were able to rapidly move here".

She said the scene "will take several hours to process".

Emergency medical services chief Robert Luckritz said three people were found dead at the scene and the injured were taken to hospitals. Of those injured, three were in a critical condition.

Mr Luckritz said they got a call "at 1.39am and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients".

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response by police and rescuers, saying they "definitely saved lives".

Police have not released the identity of the gunman or made any comment on their motive.
