Donald Trump jokes he'll run for president again at White House correspondents' dinner

President Donald Trump has joked he will seek another term in the Oval Office as he attended the White House correspondents' dinner.

Speaking at the event in Washington on Friday night, Mr Trump poked fun at his audience - a ballroom full of journalists - saying he would be running for president for a fourth time to try and get a third term in the White House.

The annual event, celebrating press freedom, was rescheduled after it was suspended in April due to an alleged attempted assassination on the US president.

It was the first time Mr Trump, who has often found himself at odds with the press, attended the White House correspondents' dinner.

During his hour-long speech, Mr Trump struck a tone which very much reflected the warm tenor of the evening as he made friendly jokes while also criticising what he calls the "fake news media".

He also took swipes at some of the journalists in attendance and various of his political rivals.

Towards the end of his speech, he joked: "That's why tonight, to show just how much I care about the press and, I want to save your ratings.

"I'm pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States."

Mr Trump then brought out a "Trump 2028" red cap and put it on.

Mr Trump has continually made comments hinting at a third term in office.

But an amendment to the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the US, prohibits anyone from serving for more than two terms.

Following the attack on the original event in April, the dinner was moved to a smaller venue at the Waldorf Astoria hotel under heightened security.

"Tonight, our message is this: We are ⁠back. We will not be intimidated," ​said the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Weijia Jiang, of CBS News.

"We refuse to let an act of violence have the final word."

Mr Trump later ​said: "We do not yield to political violence... No deranged loser with a gun will ever change that."

The president also made a bit of fun of his secretary of health and human services, RFK Jr.

"I hope that everyone finally got to enjoy their entire very delicious beef tenderloins, very special beef.

"And I want you all to know that Bobby Kennedy, who's right here, personally ran over the cow in his car. Boom, and he cut it up and he brought it here for you to eat tonight. So it's very fresh.

"And Bobby also suggested an appetiser featuring his favourite cut of male raccoon roadkill. But we drew the line at that," the president said.

He added "we love Bobby... but he is a very different kind of a person".

Addressing the journalists in the room, the president also joked: "I know it was not easy finding shoes to go along with your bulletproof vest, which many people didn't want to wear because they'd ​rather die than look 20 pounds heavier."
