England cricketer Brydon Carse withdrawn from squad for Pakistan Test after nightclub incident in Derby

England cricketer Brydon Carse has been withdrawn from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan after a nightclub incident in Derby on Saturday night.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation after footage emerged showing the bowler handcuffed by police outside a club in the city.

It happened after Durham's players had gone out to celebrate their win over Derbyshire in cricket's County Championship.

A statement from Derbyshire Police said: "A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night. However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area."

Carse will no longer take part in the second Test of the three-match series after the cricket regulator opened an investigation into the incident, the ECB announced.

The 31-year-old was due to link up with his England team-mates in London on Monday evening ahead of a training session at Lord's on Tuesday.

But he was stood down after the independent disciplinary body confirmed it would be looking into the episode.

A statement from the ECB read: "Following a referral from the ECB, the Cricket Regulator have confirmed that they will investigate events on Saturday night in Derby.

"Brydon Carse will no longer be available for selection for the Second Men's Rothesay Test Match while this investigation is ongoing and the full facts are obtained."

Fellow seamer Sonny Baker - who made his test debut against New Zealand at The Kia Oval in June - replaces Carse in England's 15-player squad.

The Carse situation comes less than two weeks after new England captain Joe Root removed the midnight curfew that had been installed following a number of drink-related issues across the winter tours of New Zealand and Australia.

Carse did not make the England XI for the three-day win over Pakistan in the series-opening Test at Headingley.

He was then released to play for Durham against Derbyshire - a County Championship game in which he took two wickets and scored 26 runs.

Durham won the match in Derby by 338 runs on Saturday.

Carse was England's leading wicket-taker during their 4-1 Ashes loss, but he has not played for his country since due to injury.

Another off-field issue for England to manage

The paceman's nightclub incident is another off-field episode for England to negotiate.

White-ball captain Harry Brook and batter Ben Duckett were both involved in apparent, separate incidents in New Zealand last autumn and in Noosa, Australia, during The Ashes last December respectively.

Former England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson missed the second Test of the 2-1 home defeat to New Zealand earlier this summer after breaking a midnight curfew as they celebrated victory in the first game of the series at Lord's.

Stokes and Atkinson were cleared of violent conduct, but hit with written warnings after "breaching specific contractual obligations".

Root had called for his players to "be adults" while announcing the removal of the curfew.

The second Test against Pakistan takes place at Lord's on 27-31 August, while the third Test is at Edgbaston on 9-13 September.
